History of Woodbine, MD

During the Civil War, Confederate cavalry crossed the Patapsco River at Woodbine and Hoods Mill, just a few miles east of the river and the B&O Railroad. They were scouting a U.S. army that was on its way to the Battle of Gettysburg. The main road at that time ran just west of where the road is today, and up the west side of a creek that runs south and joins with the Patapsco River just 50 yards west of where the road is today. That original road, now partly unused, runs north 100 yards from the river, then eastward (Gum Road) to join up with the existing road today.
The town of Woodbine is situated on both sides of the Patapsco River, with Carroll County to the north and Howard County to the south. A new concrete bridge was constructed between 1916 and 1917 in order to accommodate the town’s growing population.
The 1920s and 1930s were boom times for Woodbine, thanks in part to a large canning factory located on the Carroll County side of the river. There was also a smaller canning factory in operation at this time, powered by water from a nearby dam. Although the factory is no longer in existence,
