History of Garrett Park, MD

Garrett Park was an intentional community that was established in the 1800s by businessman Henry W. Copp. Copp was motivated to build a suburban development that would resemble an English village. To make his vision a reality, Copp named the streets after locations that appeared in the novels of Walter Scott, a well-known English author. In 1893, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad built a train station in Garrett Park, which helped to boost its growth and development.
In 1898, Garrett Park incorporated as a town, at which time it had thirty buildings and approximately 100 residents. The town was named for John Work Garrett, who had led the B&O railway for nearly three decades, including the American Civil War. Today the Town has a 4-star restaurant, post office, and farmer’s market.
However, rail suburbs failed to take off, and the community stagnated as automobiles replaced commuter trains and streetcars. In the 1920s, another company built approximately 50 more houses, now including garages.5 Sections of the town are included in the Garrett Park Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.6 For example, Garrett Park’s first school house, designed in 1928 by prominent local architect Howard Wright Cutler and now preserved as part of a residential home, is a designated historic site by the Maryland Historical Trust.7 In 1977
